Star Wars is actually a movie about transformation and a call to wake up. Embedded into action, galaxies, aliens, it tells about the war between “Light and Dark”, showing us to wake up into our real existence. The reason why it is loved by so many is that our soul and essence already knows this truth. Through a fantasy movie it shows us the truth that we already know deep inside, that we are not alone in this universe and that life is not limited to our world. This way it is easier to accept even for rational minds.
In my workshop “The Hero’s Journey” I give the example of Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader. Through this fantasy movie there are many messages to show us the way to transform the darkness into light in the world that we live in. It is encoded in to the movie so that the viewer perceives it depending on their consciousness level. One of the main codes is the names of the main characters, chosen specifically for what they represent but not understood at first glance. (The meaning of the names are given at the end of the text)
Most of the messages are hidden in the journey of Anakin and his son Luke Skywalker. The main concept in all the episodes is father-son relationship and mother, father, child trinity, also themes of most of the major religions.
Wasn’t the devil only an angel that went out of his father’s words only to ask for forgiveness to be redeemed?
Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader and his Redemption Journey
In the first three movies of the series Star Wars, we watch the transformation and inner journey of Luke Skywalker who is the main hero of the movie. When we watch the second three movies that were shot later but tells the past history of the story, we watch Luke’s father the leader of the dark, Darth Vader’s childhood, as he was Anakin Skywalker, how he was the strongest Jedi, protector of the light and how he turned into the dark. We understand the main concept when we watch all six movies and the process is completed.
The new seventh movie “The Force Awakens” takes the theme to a completely new level. We shall watch the rise of the divine feminine, the goddess that shall save the galaxy.
When we look at Anakin’s journey, Jedi Qui- gon discovers him with his extraordinary talents and gifts and takes him to train as a Jedi.
To fulfill his destiny and to discover and improve his talents he has to leave his mother to go on this journey.
The essence of Star Wars is hidden in little Anakin’s words while he is parting from his mother;
- A: I can’t do it (Anakin is faced with his first test on his journey to fulfill his potential. He has to part from his most precious being, his mother)
- A: Will I ever see you again? (will become his biggest fear)
- A: I hope so (hope)
- A: Yes (belief)
- A: I guess (doubt)
- A: I will come back for you mom, I promise (promise and not being able to fulfill it will be the first seed that will take him into darkness)
When Qui- gon returns to the capital to gives the information about Anakin to the Jedi Council, he does not receive a very positive reaction due to his age. Here it is indicated that a child of around 5-6 years old already has a very established belief system.
Anakin’s emotions, fears and worries that will later turn him into Darth Vader are detected and warned by the Jedi Council and Yoda right from the beginning.
Just as we also do in our own lives, what we perceive and feel at the beginning turns out to become the truth later on. However if it is not something that we like to accept we disregard and think that we can change it, just like Qui – gon does in the movie.
- Yoda: How feel you
- Anakin: Cold sir (not aware of his feeling, only feels his physical body)
- Y: Afraid are you?
- A: No sir (not aware of his own fears)
- Y: See through you, we can
- Council member 1: Be mindful of your feelings
- Council member 2: Your thoughts dwell on your mother
- A: I miss her
- Y: Afraid to lose her I think (his deepest fear)
- A: What has that got to do with anything? (denial, not being aware, not wanting to see the truth)
- Y: EVERYTHİNG
- Fear is the path to the dark side, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering ( the essence of why he turned into the dark is told in Yoda’s famous quote)
- I sense much fear in you
Anakin is the chosen one, the most powerful Jedi who will balance the force. However, his rebellious soul that is having difficulty obeying the rules together with his intense emotions is being defeated by his dark, fearful thoughts. Feeding his biggest fear coming from his childhood he is going to make it come true. He is the one to save the whole galaxy but he could not save the person most dear to him, his mother, she does in his arms since he reaches her in the last moment. With his pain Anakin falls to the dark, growing it stronger inside of him and kills all the tribe that has killed his mother including all the children, something a Jedi must never do.
At his mother’s grave his words are;
- I was not strong enough to save you (quilt, pain)
- I was not strong enough
- But I promise I will never fail again ( again a promise he will not be able to fullfil and the fear of living the same pain again)
- I miss you (not letting go, addiction )
With his mother’s death his pain does not vanish, it becomes stronger and projects to the other woman in his life whom he loves very much, to his wife Padme. His fears together with his anger erode his soul, seeping as nightmares into his nights. He continuously sees Padme dying and he cannot save her. The fear of going through the same pain seeks in and the dark shall catch him right from here.
When he consults Master Yoda on the situation, the Jedi master tells him how he can save himself but Anakin would not be able to receive it;
- Yoda: You must be careful sensing the future Anakin, a fear of loss is the path to the dark side
- Anakin: I won’t let these visions come true Master Yoda (again a promise he cannot fulfill, he rebels against what will be or what should be, but if he could accept and surrender only then would he be able to change what shall be)
- Y: Death is a natural part of life, rejoice those around you who transform to the force, mourn them not, miss them do not, attachment leads to jealousy.
- A: What must I do Master Yoda
- Y: Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose (And is this not exactly what we all need to learn in this life?)
Mastery will be shown and thought through the Jedi trainings in all the Star Wars series. Mastery is the art of domination of one’s self emotions and thoughts in one’s mind. Through this Mastery one learns to shape the reality called life and to create this reality as one wants.
We as humans and as humanity, instead of transforming our own dark thoughts and emotions, we are trying to control and manipulate the world around us. Yet everything we see round us is only a reflection of our inner world. Trying to change, blame a person, situation outside of yourself is like trying to look in the mirror and to comb the mirror instead of your own hair. Is this not what all the world is doing now, if we just stopped and transformed ourselves would not the world be changed immediately.
Going back to Anakin’s journey, even though he is the most powerful and chosen one, the pain of not being able to save his mother and the fear of losing the women he loves the most, his wife will fulfill itself. When he becomes ready to do anything just to save his wife and not let her die, the dark shall be successful to seduce him. The dark takes over his soul saying “Learn the dark side and its powers and so save your wife”. It look like he does everything, even obeying the dark for love, whereas it is not love but only an obsession and fear of losing that has taken him prisoner.
Anakin Skywalker, who fails the tests and trials that he has to pass to realize that even death, is not an end, the acceptance and surrender that everything happens as it should in the divine plan now becomes Darth Vader.
The pain of him turning to the dark kills his wife Padme. As a self-fulfilling prophecy he creates his own reality. Anakin’s powers make his fears as strong, and therefore his tests. To find his way back to the light he will need to go through the darkness.
Do we all not go through similar tests, when our heart is broken do we not make promises of revenge and never to love again, when life is not fair, the times we are weak and we are suppressed we take it out on others when we have the power to do so making them go through the same pain as we went through and this goes on and on like this. What if we do it differently this time, break this chain. What if we could let all this go, who would we be and how would we behave?
This is exactly what Darth Vader and Padme’s son Luke Skywalker makes; a different choice. And because of this he is the hero of this story. When he finds out who his father is and is seduced in many ways to turn into the darkness and finally threatened to be killed, he surrenders to the goodness he still believes to be in him, to his essence, his soul “I will not kill you, you can kill me if you want” he says. His belief and light saves them both.
The story of the past that is given in the second trilogy gives us a chance to see what was even the greatest darkness before it transforms into that. We see the small innocent child with a great potential that is inside of Darth Vader. With this is shown that even what we see as the greatest of darkness has in its essence love and light.
Can we forgive those who have been Darth Vader in our lives like Luke did, believe in the light in them and save ourselves and that person, and change our reality? See the innocent child in them and release their pain? Remain in love whatever happens and love that person? And pass maybe the greatest test of life itself? Can we even have the courage to ask ourselves these questions?
Seventh Movie; “The Force Awakens”, the Rise of the Divine Goddess
In the return of the long waited legend the most important concept is that the most powerful Jedi and hero of the story is a pure and innocent girl. Rey represents the divine feminine energy, the goddess that will transform this world.
Rey, alone and lonely is a young women who has lost all her family and is gathering metal pieces for food. Unaware of her powers she carries inside, the talents and gifts that she has inherited from her lineal ancestors is only trying to survive. She represents the Rey in all of us, especially women.
For centuries, even since Adam and Eve, feared and misunderstood, considered seductive, mother of all evil, suppressed, slaved, the feminine energy is reborn in Rey’s powers.
Feminine energy does not mean women, feminine and masculine energy is inside all of us. Masculine energy is action, protection, analytical, warrior side whereas the feminine energy is the soft, accepting, nurturing, compassionate forgiving side that carries the essence of love.
The world has been ruled by masculine energy during the history that we know of. However, what is going to lead us to love, let us win the battle between light and dark that we see in the star wars movie, is the acceptance of the feminine energy compassion and love. Yet the women in the world that we live in have sheltered into their masculine powers to be able to cope with the men and become masculine and the men are feeling baffled, lost and like they are losing their powers. It is now time for both men and women to rebalance their feminine and masculine energies.
I suppose we shall see this in the coming episodes. Leia and Han Solo’s son, Kyle Ren is the dark leader in the place of Darth Vader. In the last scene of the movie, Kyle Ren and Rey have a fight with their light sabers. Their coming against each other as woman – man and Rey being the only one able to cope with him symbolizes the feminine power. Their family ties have been kept secret for the coming movies but a high probability is that they are brother-sister or cousins. Rey is man’s name meaning King has been used which is another symbolism.
It shows that she could be the King, Queen of a future Light Kingdom. We also see the feminine and masculine energy in the beginning with Anakin and Padme as a couple. Padme meaning lotus flower represents pureness and the light. Since we inherit many of our attributes with our genes from our family and ancestors, the lineage of Padme and Anakin take on different traits, Luke and Leia manifest as light, and the from the next generation, Rey and Kyle Ren come as light and darkness.
At the end of the series I don’t know if we shall see the light’s glory and peace reigning in the entire galaxy and darkness vanished completely, I sure hope so. Star Peace “No More Wars, Always Love” could be an appropriate name for such a movie. But what kind of a movie would it be when light wins and all is magnificent? What would the concept be, everybody so happy, creating their potential, worlds of heaven and journeys among galaxies with competitions on who will give more love. How does such a scenario make you feel? Do you say wow great or do you think it would be boring. Without wars scenes, without the darkness do you find it boring and stagnant and if this is how you perceive how do you think this reflects to your life, do you need action and war to have fun, do you still need the darkness to see the light? Only when we can have joy and peace and love in a world where all is well we can create it in our reality, we have to create this in our consciousness first. This must manifest in all our thoughts, words, every book we read, every movie we watch and it will reflect into our life.
Of course everything is perception; these are just some themes that I thought are important, my views. Star Wars, is a movie that shows many different realities, depending on your perception, and as you explore, with eyes that can see, ears that can hear and an open mind there are lots secrets to be discovered.
May the force be with you and always remain in light and love
The meaning of the names;
Anakin Skywalker: It has two meanings; first it means “warrior”, in this case used as a warrior of light I presume. The second “Born of the gods”, where Anakin’s mother mentions that he did not have a father, she just became pregnant, a sort of reference to prophet and this is also given in the meaning of the name.
